U of GTT #6: Split-Testing Destination Links

June 19th, 2009

GoTryTHIS lets you edit where links go, after they are already published around the Internet. Especially useful for affiliate marketers, you can also edit links to split-test different affiliate programs to see which one converts the best. This is also great for testing your own web sites against competitors as shown in this tutorial.

Please read the notes under the video for a correction.

Notes:
It’s been pointed out in the comments that you cannot split-test adword links, which I had forgotten when I created this video. However, the same principle does work if you send them to a landing page (such as a squeeze page to add them to your list) and then split where you send them from there.

As well, it has been privately pointed out to me before, that you can split-test your PPC links after they have been approved, as the published PPC destination link doesn’t change. (It’s still going to the GoTryTHIS link, and that link then redirects them to the final split-tested destination.) That isn’t playing by the rules though and could have negative consequences. Remember, if you update your PPC campaign, it will likely get checked for approval again.

When entering links on the “To URL:” line, does it make a difference if the URLs have or do not have “www.” or “http://” ?

Instead of a single-line text input, how about a text area box with links separated by new lines? Or multiple lines for each link? Good in the cases where the links are super long.

Probably good to have short instructions like: “Enter links separated by commas.”

You can put the same links you would put in a browser, with or without the http://. Some sites will work with or without the www. If it works in a browser, it should work here too.

We’ll keep improving the interface, so thank you for your feedback.

Those short instructions will be coming in an update prior to launching.

Hmm.. None of the videos are showing at my end!

And in the announcements part of the Dashboard, the videos are portrayed by something like this:

    [flow href="http://www.gotrythis.com/videos/tutorials/SplitTesting.flv" width="537" height="387"]

    Needs some attention, I think!

If anyone knows why the videos don’t play for some people, please let me know. They won’t be appearing in the main blog or in the dashboard once we’re finished. They’ll have their own section. Still working on things.

    Hi John

Just tried viewing videos in FF. No problem :-)

So it seems to be an issue with IE. Strange, because I’ve watched many vids through the FlowPlayer interface.

Yes, yet another quirk with IE. Can we get a petition to banish IE from the web?

The video played ok for me (ffox 3.0.11, xp, vaio). Btw you CANNOT split test adwords destination url’s unless the display url remains the same… which it wouldn’t in the case of your example re different competitors. So cut the video down to 1.5 mins and just focus on the main feature split testing non-ppc traffic to similar offers.

Can I track conversions with gtt? I’ve been trying to figure out how to do this.
